They are a part of the growing reawakening environmental consciousness and the literary canon of human ecology and rooted in such poets and writers as Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Philip Whalen, Gary Snyder, John Muir, Cid Corman, Lorine Niedecker and Sam Hamill.
